چکیده

Density inhomogeneities along the line-of-sight distort fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. Usually, this effect is thought of as a small second-order effect that mildly alters the statistics of the microwave background fluctuations. We show that there is a first-order effect that is potentially observable if we combine microwave background maps with large redshift surveys. We introduce a new quantity that measures this lensing effect, < T (δθ · ∇T ) >, where T is the microwave background temperature and δθ is the lensing due to matter in the region probed by the redshift survey. We show that the expected signal is first order in the gravitational lensing bending angle, < (δθ)2 >1/2, and find that it should be easily detectable, (S/N)∼ 15 − 35, if we combine the Microwave Anisotropy Probe satellite and Sloan Digital Sky Survey data. Measurements of this cross-correlation will directly probe the “bias” factor, the relationship between fluctuations in mass and fluctuations in galaxy counts. Direct Signature of Evolving Gravitational Potential from Cosmic Microwave Background

We show that time dependent gravitational potential can be directly detected from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The signature can be measured by cross-correlating the CMB with the projected density field reconstructed from the weak lensing distortions of the CMB itself. The cross-correlation gives a signal whenever there is a time dependent gravitational potential. This me...

Cross-correlating the Sloan Digital Sky Survey with the Microwave Sky

While most of the microwave background fluctuations on angular scales greater than a few arcminutes were generated at z > 800, the low redshift universe does distort the microwave background. Since the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) traces the structures in the low-redshift universe, we can gain additional insights into the physics of the low-redshift universe by cross-correlating microwave ba...

Detectability of Gravitational Lensing Effect on the Two-point Correlation Function of Hotspots in the CMB maps

We present quantitative investigations of the weak lensing effect on the two-point correlation functions of local maxima (hotspots), ξpk−pk(θ), in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps. The lensing effect depends on the projected mass fluctuations between today and the redshift zrec ≈ 1100. If adopting the Gaussian assumption for the primordial temperature fluctuations field, the peak stat...

Weak gravitational lensing is responsible for the shearing and magnification of the images of high-redshift sources due to the presence of intervening mass. Since the lensing effects arise from deflections of the light rays due to fluctuations of the gravitational potential, they can be directly related to the underlying density field of the large-scale structures.
